Pad Style:Blocking/ButterflyThe style of play ("Reaction/ Hybrid" or "Blocking/Butterly") that the pad was designed for. "Reaction/Hybrid" pads tend to be more flexible and have more breaks - great for those with a narrow butterfly. "Blocking/Butterfly" pads tend to have fewer breaks and are more rigid - better for goalies with a wider butterfly.
Knee Breaks:1Breaks in the foam & material of the outer roll. Pads with zero (O) knee breaks tend to be more rigid and have less flex, while pads with one (1) or two (2) knee breaks are "softer" and have more flex built into them.

The 7190 Velocity 5 Leg Pad is a new model for 2012, and it is styled after the 7990 Pro model leg pad to be optimized in shape and design to provide superior performance for the Junior sized goaltender.  The 7190 is packed with features typically found only on Intermediate and Senior level pads, making it ideal for the more experienced Junior goaltender.

For starters, the 7190 features a full leg cradle to enhance pad control, as well as a full knee cradle with an angled adjustment strap to speed pad rotation and provide precise control and placement.  The wide inside pad edge, coupled with large knee and calf balance stabilizers, provide a solid seal to the ice and a stable platform when going into, and moving around the crease in a butterfly position.  Molded thigh guards provide protection to the knee and thigh area, and help fill in the five hole.  Three leather straps and one nylon webbing strap (at the thigh rise) secure the pad to the goaltender's leg.

The pad face features a single break below the knee with solid one piece construction from the knee area to the top of the thigh rise - ideal for goalies with wider butterflies.  The face of the pad is flat, and Vaughn has included their traditional "Flex Pac" construction for a soft feel and greater rebound control.  The 7190 also features the new 7990 graphic design so that the kids can have the same look that the pro's have.

  • Knee cradle for pad control
  • Inner edge balance stabilizer
  • Molded knee/thigh guard
  • Solid top outside roll
  • Full inner leg protection
  • Easy break-in design and construction
  • Flex-pack internal foam for rebound control
  • Lightweight for quick movement

The Key factor is the overall length. The length can be divided into three sections:

A.The boot

B.Instep to knee

C.Knee to top or thigh rise

The proper length of the goal pad boot is determined by the goalie's skate size. The next key area is the instep to knee that determines the shin length. Finally, the knee to top or thigh rise is a personal measurement depending on how much pant and pad overlap the goaltender prefers. A general rule is 7" to 8".

A.Skates size: provide the skate size for proper boot fit.

B.Instep to knee: measure from instep to the front center of kneecap while leg is in slightly bent position.

C. Thigh rise: measure from front center of kneecap up the thigh to desire height.

A + B + C = Estimated size of pad

If fitted properly, the goalie's knee should rest directly behind the center knee roll with the pad securely attached to the goal skate and properly strapped on the goaltender's leg. Generally, this will ensure that the pad breaks (bends) at the knee/shin and ankle as designed for optimal performance.
