Once you have tried on some different hockey glove styles and made a choice, fitting the glove is pretty simple. To determine your hockey glove size, measure from your fingertips to the end of your elbow pad, and round up to the nearest inch. For example, if the distance measures 13.7”, then you’ll want to look at a 14” hockey glove. If you don’t have elbow pads, you can also measure from the base of your middle finger to the inside of your elbow.

Most adults wear size 13, 14, or 15 hockey gloves, while youth hockey gloves usually range from sizes 7 to 9, and junior gloves from sizes 10 to 12.

How Should My Hockey Gloves Fit?

The ideal fit will be comfortable but not too tight. While some players prefer a looser-fitting glove and others like a close fit, correctly sized hockey gloves should completely cover the lower arm. No matter the preference, the cuff of the glove should extend to the bottom of the elbow pads. Properly sizing your hockey gloves will keep your hands protected without hindering the dexterity and mobility you need to handle your stick. For maximum comfort, your fingertips should lie between ¼” and a ½” from the end of the hockey gloves. This space allows you to retain control of your fingers but still gives them enough leeway so they won’t hit the ends of the glove when you bend them. If your fingers touch the end of the glove, it is too small.

When trying on new gloves at a local retail store, use this checklist to make sure you're choosing the right fit with this checklist:

• Make sure there is at least one-quarter inch of space for the fingertips.
• Make sure the palm material does not stretch when a fist is made.
• Make sure the finger breaks are comfortable and closely line up with your knuckles.
• Make sure the break at the wrist lines up with the back of your wrist.

Your new hockey gloves should give you both comfort and control; gloves aren’t much use if they aren’t comfortable with the hockey stick in your hand. If it’s the right size and fit, you’ll feel in control of the glove. The easiest way to test this is to pick up a hockey stick off the floor. Most hockey gloves today need little breaking in and are almost game ready out of the box, so you should be able to pick up your stick with ease.

Hockey Glove Fit Profiles

Many hockey gloves come in a few basic fit profiles. A traditional fit is the boxy, classic-looking hockey glove, typically with a four-roll back and a looser fit inside the glove. An anatomical fit contours to the body so the glove feels like an extension of the hand, offering little range of motion inside the glove; this tighter fit helps some players feel like they have more control over their movements. A tapered fit is the middle ground between the other fit profiles, with a snug fit around the hands and fingers that widens at the back of the hand and the cuff for added range of motion at the wrists.
