While preference can account for why many hockey players wear and use the gear they do, if you’re wearing the CCM FitLite 500 hockey helmet, chances are you have a thing for wearing “the best.” The FitLite 500 boasts CCM’s most protective helmet interior yet, made with a bevy of performance and protection features that will invoke the youth player excitement in even the most grizzled elite players.

  • High-density PE two-piece shell for superior protection
  • Tool-less adjustment system for a personalized fit, front to back
  • Multi-density VN foam liner for 25% increased thickness and better impact energy absorption
  • I.Q.Shion open-cell, memory foam-type material for dry comfort
  • D3O Smart Foam for class-leading temple and occipital protection
  • For use with FM500 cage for maximum visibility and facial protection

While the FitLite 500 shell looks similar to the rest of the helmets in the FitLite line, the FL500 shell has been designed specifically for this helmet. The high-density PE shell comes in a two-piece design that’s adjustable with dual tool-less side adjustments. These side adjustments provide a personalized fit from front to back. The helmet also includes front and rear vents to keep your hockey hair dry.

The helmet interior is the most protective of any helmet CCM has marketed. It features a multi-density VN foam liner—but this VN is about 25% thicker than the VN you’re used to. The helmet can now absorb a lot more direct impact energy. Consequently, the FL500 is a heavier helmet. But consider why: it has more material to protect you better.

The FL500 features CCM’s I.Q.Shion liner, an open-cell, memory foam-type material that’s comfortable and soft, helping to wick away moisture for dry comfort. The FitLite FL500 also features CCM’s D3O Smart Foam at both temples and at the back of the head, where many direct impacts occur. The D3O is one of the most protective materials CCM offers in any of their protective gear. D3O Smart Foam is rate sensitive, meaning it’s pliable and soft to the touch but grows stiff as impact intensity increases.

While this helmet doesn’t come as a combo, it works with the FM500 cage, with thin, straight alloy bars designed for maximum visibility. The chin cup is a dual-density floating model that’s both comfortable and dry thanks to moisture-directing channels.

CCM has another winner in the FitLite FL500 hockey helmet. In this day and age of head injury awareness across all sports, CCM is stepping up with products designed to perform better than ever while not busting the consumer’s budget. With an emphasis on safety and protection while continuing to look super cool, the FL500 is a great example of what the forward thinking designers at CCM can do.

CCM Fitlite 500 Helmet Sizing

Place the tape measure in the centre back of your head and wind both sides round to the front, placing it just above your ears and below your hairline. Bring the tape measure together in the middle of your forehead. Keep in mind that this measurement does not account for personal preference.
Size Hat Size Head Circumference
Small 61/4 - 7 50 - 56 cm
Medium 63/4 - 73/8 54 - 59 cm
Large 71/4 - 77/8 58 - 64 cm
Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 star helmet I bought this helmet because of its 5 star rating by Virginia Tech. My 9yo has a friend that hit the boards and was off the ice for 10 days, otherwise I would have waited until next season. In AAA, they move fast, so there was no good reason to delay purchasing. The helmet is comfortable for him and the cage provides great vision. It’s a little bigger than the Bauer reakt 75 he had, little like an astronaut, but it’s safe. Happy with our purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Who cares about looks - protect your noggin I play adult beer league hockey, have a family, need to be smart at meetings ... bought this because of the VT 5-star ratings. Who cares about looks, I'm not making any highlight reels (especially because livebarn is so garbage), buy it for the safety and live a healthy life. I paired it with a Bauer Re-Akt cage as I liked that profile and wires better.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Try before you buy My 15 year old was outgrowing his medium Re-Akt 75 so I wanted to upgrade his helmet while keeping in my the VA Tech ratings. So I was excited for him to try the FL500. We bought a large thinking it would work on his 7 1/4 head. No dice. It was tight on his temples regardless of how we adjusted it. And YES, as others have said, it is a big helmet! I get how it earned a 5 star rating; they made a bigger shell and added padding. Like a motorcycle helmet. Pez dispenser looks aside we would have kept it if the fit was better. TRY IT ON BEFORE YOU BUY! Also the fact you can't order with a cage is a fail on CCM's part.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from sizing a little off my eighth grader has a 56 cm circumference head. On the sizing chart, the upper limit for small is 56 cm so I wanted to buy a medium. So I was told to buy a SM/M size. This is too tight. Ok, so I figure they must be made small and bought the large which is the only other option. This is a little big. I can make it fit better by adjusting the side helmet retainer clips using only 1 screw but this is not ideal as eventually these will move. Not sure why there is not a medium sized helmet. if you have a big head, definitely should try this on first. Otherwise it is a good helmet. Seems very protective. the padding is twice as thick as a usual helmet. Surprisingly, seems to make my bantam seem a little more imposing with that big head.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very specific to your head shape, Good quality. I bought this last year for my daughter from a Bauer REAKT 200, because of the higher WVA star rating. The REAKT 200 is a smaller / narrower fit. This was too big for her and is a wider helmet than the Bauer sizing. It also seems heavier. It is a very high quality helmet but will not fit everyone. BTW — the WVA concussion ratings aren’t very material to real concussion prevention, as told to me by Concussion Center doctors at HSS. So my advice is if you have a high quality helmet that fits well, dont necessarily think that a helmet’s less than perfect concussion rating is a deficiency. For example, wearing a good mouth guard correctly will reduce hockey concussion risk more than than a 5 star helmet versus a 4.2 star helmet.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sizing issues CCM needs to include a true medium size for this helmet. The temple area width between a small to a medium and then to a large varies significantly. The SM/MD size was too small for my 16 year old and the large was too big. I gave the helmet two stars because is seems well built, but that will mean nothing if it doesn’t fit correctly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Huge, odd fit! Helmet looks massive. It does NOT have a custom fit unless you have a very large, round head. There is no adjustment in the back like most other helmets. Feels loose on the sides and back lower part of head. No stores in my area have these in stock to try. It looks like there was no real design just bigger bucket with additional padding taped inside. My advice, save the box you’ll probably be sending it back!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Awesome if it fits you Great protection. Not as heavy or as bulky as you might think. It is just a very wide fitting helmet. For comparison purposes, My 12-year-old fits perfectly into a ReAkt 200 size medium. The large 500 helmet is way too wide and the smaller size is way too small. CCM is on to something great in terms of protection. They need to rework the fit profile and add another size.

I am not seeing the weight of the helmet. Can you tell me the total weight of the helmet with the recommended cage?

Asked by: Wy2005
The SM/MD size we weighed was 735 grams. In terms of what cage to get. We suggest the FM500 mask. This is made specifically for the FL500 helmet. Thanks!

Can a Large helmet be paired with a small FM500 facemask for peewee aged kids?

Asked by: Vin K
We have fit bigger helmets with smaller cages for young players who happen to have bigger heads but smaller faces, very common actually. Just make sure you are choosing the FL500 cage as that is the only cage that will work with the FL500 helmet. Thanks!

When do you expect to receive the FM500 in black in stock?  For sizing the cage as the helmet is sm/m which size corresponding cage do you order, small or medium?

Asked by: kellyhasdogs
I don't have a stock date on the FM500 cages at this time. Either a small or medium cage will work, it depends more on what will fit your face best.
