The 1000i Velocity 6 leg pad is a completely new design for 2014, and it utilizes several of the innovations that are found in the 2000 Pro leg pad. For starters, the 1000i includes Vaughn's new Pro Core design - a full length and width sheet foam interior to help the pad maintain it's shape over time, but with updated, firmer "Pro Pac" stuffing material to maintain the softer feel that Velocity users have come to enjoy. This new core also allows the pad to save weight over past models. Additionally, the 1000i is built using Vaughn's new "over squared" design. This design adds slightly more material to the inside edge of the thigh rise to insure that it keeps in contact with the ice in the butterfly position.
Also new this year, Vaughn has given the inside of the pad a "clean edge design", meaning that the bindings have been removed, harder foam has been added, and the seams have been optimally placed so that they don't hinder sliding at all. The end result is a pad that slides much better than it's predecessor (the 7260 V5), and it also has a more durable inside edge as well.
The knee cradle area has been widened by 1/2" to accommodate larger knee pads, and the leg channel has also been widened by 3/8" to provide for easier pad rotation. Additionally, the new leg cradle has been made lighter, and it also acts as a sling to hold the body weight more evenly off the ice, and in a more balanced position. This allows the goalie the wear the straps more loosely and still get the desired leg support. The leg channel is still lined with Vaughn's popular, padded MSH3 material for extreme comfort and control.

The Key factor is the overall length. The length can be divided into three sections:
A.The boot
B.Instep to knee
C.Knee to top or thigh rise
The proper length of the goal pad boot is determined by the goalie's skate size. The next key area is the instep to knee that determines the shin length. Finally, the knee to top or thigh rise is a personal measurement depending on how much pant and pad overlap the goaltender prefers. A general rule is 7" to 8".
A.Skates size: provide the skate size for proper boot fit.
B.Instep to knee: measure from instep to the front center of kneecap while leg is in slightly bent position.
C. Thigh rise: measure from front center of kneecap up the thigh to desire height.
A + B + C = Estimated size of pad
If fitted properly, the goalie's knee should rest directly behind the center knee roll with the pad securely attached to the goal skate and properly strapped on the goaltender's leg. Generally, this will ensure that the pad breaks (bends) at the knee/shin and ankle as designed for optimal performance.
